World Refugee Day and Matariki 2011 (Maori New Year)
Matariki is a time for coming together, cultural exchange, and new beginnings. World Refugee Day is a time for recognising the strength and resilience of communities and cultures who have been forced to flee their homelands for nothing more than their race, religion or beliefs.
“Let’s Shake” is an event that invites people from of all ages, backgrounds and abilities to come together to make ART at the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa (Te Papa).
Let’s Shake brings together communities that wouldn’t ordinarily meet to shake hands, talk, share and create. It involves sitting at a table with another person and making a unique piece of art together by shaking hands while waiting for the plaster to harden between your hands. The mould you create will form part of an installation that will be exhibited in
Everyone is welcome, so please spread the word amongst your community, your family, your friends, your work colleagues and if you are keen to participate simply email us at: info@projectkit.co.nz with their preferred date and time or just turn up on the day. Each sitting will take about 30 minutes. And remember 20 June is also World Refugee Day, so it’s going to be extra special.
Event date and times:
• 17 June 1-5pm
• 19 June 11am-2pm
• 20 June 1-4pm
This event has been endorsed by the Human Rights Commission and is part of the Diversity in Action Programme 2011.
